“It’s not that you’ve ran out of people to prospect. You just don’t want success badly enough, yet.”

I was sitting there amongst the crowd at the weekly company meeting, listening to this up and coming distributor give his first speech since he joined the company 6 weeks ago.

His name is Sean, a 43 year old who had just lost his job as a result of the economic recession.

As the wide-eyed audience listened to how Sean’s managed to pick himself up after his fall from grace, he ended his speech with this:

“I’m no smarter, or better looking, or have more than 24 hours a day compared to anyone else in this room. If I can do it with the same compensation plan, then so can YOU!”

“YES!”, some leaders exclaimed in agreement, prompting the audience to erupt in cheers and applause.

You may have heard these remarks being thrown around by sponsors or the top earner in your company…

“that if Sean could do it, then there’s no reason why you can’t…”

“it’s not because you’ve ran out of people to prospect, but rather, you simply don’t desire to succeed badly enough, yet.”

For a while, my amateur networker mind foolishly accepted that as truth.

I would then force myself to go through my list of warm market a second and third time, join lots of Facebook groups and try to prospect strangers, or hand out flyers at crowded places.

But no matter how hard I tried, I’d still end up with a pile of rejection and less than a handful of prospects who said they were interested to find out more, but NEVER EVER show up for the meeting.

If this situation feels familiar to you, it’s not because “you don’t want success bad enough”.

As with most leaders desperate for a way to motivate their team, they have conveniently forgot to mention that Sean was a pretty successful banker with 14 years of experience before he lost his job.

What most sponsors and Sean (or any other person you’re seeing on stage) failed to mention was that they had something most people don’t naturally possess:

Also, get a new job that allows you to meet lots of new people, who also has connections with lots of other people.

However, even if you were to eventually build up a warm market the size of Sean’s network, you’re still working with unqualified prospects.

Although these people know you, they haven’t raised their hand to signal their interest in your offer.

If you were to approach them, you’ll notice them finding ways to avoid you, politely (maybe). You’ll still be shooting bullets in every single direction, HOPING that at least one is gonna hit a target.

Hustling like Sean still involved trading time for money. With the only difference being that you’re going to take longer to burn through your warm market.
